Literacy was the focus, but music was the means to convey the message on Saturday at the New Orleans Public Library among elementary students.
Turn the Page literacy event at the New Orleans Public Library had elementary students intrigued.
Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, pianist Ellis Marsalis, trombonist Glen David Andrews, drummer Shannon Powell, banjo player Detroit Brooks, bassist Richard Moten and sax player Wes Anderson performed a free show at the main public library on Loyola Avenue. The performance was part of an effort to make New Orleans the most literate city in America by 2018. In addition to playing, Mayfield read the book, "The Jazz Fly" to the dozens of children and parents attending the program.
Other readers included Attorney Morris Bart, who read from the book, "Goodnight NOLA."
The Turn the Page campaign will have 30 literacy events in 30 days to promote literacy among children and adults.
